After it revolutionised the idea of the sports car back in 2014, the hybrid i8 is a forward-looking model that has just received its mid-life update.
Along with the coupe, BMW has introduced a Roadster version that takes away the back seats and means you can enjoy the low-emission performance in the open air.
But what has this soft-top sports car got to offer? We take a look at the 2018 i8 Roadster…
The petrol-hybrid powertrain is pretty potent
What makes the i8 quite special is its mixture of conventional and new age power, with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine teamed with an electric motor that can both work independently. The combustion engine’s power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed auto, while the electric motor sends its power to the front via a two-speed ‘box – which when working in tandem means four-wheel drive. The duo combines to make 369bhp and 320Nm of torque – which allows the i8 to get from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds and go on to a limited top speed of 155mph.
It comes with model-specific features
To further distinguish it from the coupe, the Roadster comes with specially-tuned suspension and damping to suit the soft top’s characteristics, as well as aluminium components that are optimised for the model. This version of the i8 also comes with CRFP panels on the dihedral doors and skirts, which help keep the weight down and mean – due to additional strengthening – that the Roadster is only 60kg heavier than the coupe.
Laser headlights make it easy to see far in the dark
The new front lights fitted are full LEDs and employ laser technology to ensure they go as far as possible. The maximum distance ahead they can illuminate is 600m and the system is available on both the coupe and roadster. It has been engineered so it doesn’t dazzle oncoming drivers while turned on.
Driving assistant comes as standard
To ensure the car comes with a good level of safety, the i8 Roadster gets BMW’s driving assistant system as standard, which includes collision and pedestrian warning, park distance control, high beam assistant, speed limit info and all-round cameras, as well as cruise control with braking function. Customers can also choose to spec a head-up display.
It does come at a premium
If you want this futuristic sports car that looks and drives like a rocketship, you may have to start breaking open your savings jar, as prices start from £124,735 for the Roadster. That’s a fair bit of money, but considering how good it is to drive and all the equipment you get with it, you may be worth taking BMW up of its offer.
