Flagship BMW 7 Series gains new more powerful and efficient engines

Mild-hybrid technology aims to make BMW’s range-topping luxury car cheaper to run than before

BMW has announced a pair of new straight-six diesel engines for its flagship 7 Series saloon.

The new engines are both more powerful and more efficient than the engines they replace – mainly thanks to new 48-volt mild-hybrid technology which is fitted to both models.

This system can help to recuperate energy when braking, with this being stored in a small battery. This energy can then be used to assist the engine by providing additional power and torque if needed.

The two updated 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engines are the 730d and 740d, both of which are also available in a long-wheelbase form.

With the 730d, its power has increased by 21bhp to produce 282bhp. As for the 740d, this sees a 20bhp boost – meaning it now offers 335bhp.

This additional power has helped to cut the 0-60mph times by 0.3 seconds on both models – meaning they now take 5.4 seconds and 4.8 seconds on the 730d and 740d respectively. BMW is also promising efficiency improvements, though full figures still need to be confirmed.

Alongside this pair of engines, BMW is introducing new rear-wheel-steering to the 7 Series as an optional extra – something that helps to improve manoeuvrability at lower speed and enhanced agility at higher speeds.

Elsewhere, there are a pair of new colours available – Phytonic Blue and Frozen Bluestone, while additional leather colours are available, too.

The new engines are available to order now, with deliveries set to start from July. Prices start from £74,495 for the 730d and £82,865 for the 740d, which features xDrive all-wheel-drive as standard.
