Ford adds rugged appeal to Transit with new Trail and Active models

The models feature SUV-inspired looks and additional off-road capability

Ford has expanded the line-up of its best-selling Transit models with new rugged ‘Active’ and ‘Trail’ versions that bring chunkier styling and all-wheel-drive.

‘Trail’ models are the ones for those wanting additional go-anywhere ability, with all-wheel-drive available on the main Transit and a new mechanical limited slip differential (mLSD) on the smaller Transit Custom models.

With the latter, the system allows torque to be sent to the wheel with the most traction – meaning they’re far less likely to get stuck. Meanwhile with the all-wheel-drive Transit, it gets additional ‘Slippery’ and ‘Mud/Rut’ driving modes. Ford says load space isn’t compromised next to regular rear-wheel-drive Transits.

They also gain styling tweaks – including additional black plastic cladding, unique 16-inch alloy wheels, a matte black grille and large ‘Ford’ decals.

Both Trail models are available with Ford’s 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, which is available with 128bhp, 168bhp or 182bhp. With the Transit Custom, you’re also to choose it with fuel-saving mild-hybrid technology as well. Trail models also bring extra standard kit – including leather seats, automatic lights and electrically folding mirrors.

Transit Trail and Transit Custom Trails cost from £35,685 and £29,250 respectively.

For those wanting rugged looks, but not the extra off-road ability, Ford is also introducing an ‘Active’ model on the Transit Custom van and the eight-seat Tourneo Custom MPV. It’s a grade already available on the Fiesta and Focus, and adds different 17-inch alloy wheels, chunkier styling thanks to plastic cladding and a revised grille.

‘Active’ decals are also fitted, while the on the interior it gets part-leather seats and blue styling accents. It’s available with the same choice of engines as Trail versions, too, while the mLSD is available for a £550 extra.

Active models are priced from £30,000 on the Transit Custom and £37,950 on the Tourneo Custom, with all versions available to order now.
