Ford celebrates 55 years of Mustang with new model upgrades

A new special edition has been introduced, alongside revisions to the 2.3-litre petrol engine.

Ford has announced a new special edition Mustang to celebrate 55 years of its iconic American muscle car.

Named the Mustang55, the model has been confirmed for Europe and features the same 444bhp 5.0-litre V8 found in the regular car. New additions include black bonnet and side stripes, special edition badging, a black roof, black 19-inch alloy wheels and an optional spoiler. Models painted in black come with separate silver striping. Further gloss black accents also appear throughout the exterior.

Mustang owners looking for a real performance without the cost of a V8 model can also benefit from Ford tuner Shelby’s upgrades on the entry-level 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. This includes an active sports exhaust, which means drivers can adjust the sound of the exhaust note, depending on preference. A ‘Good Neighbour’ mode is also embedded, which can limit the loudness of the exhaust at certain times of the day.

Buyers can also now pick from a more vivid choice of colours – including Grabber Lime and Twister Orange.

Roelant de Waard, vice president of marketing and sales at Ford Europe, said: “The Mustang is one of an exclusive group of vehicles to achieve more than half a century of continuous production, and customers’ appetites for the world’s best-selling sports car show no sign of waning.

“Our new Mustang55 is the essence of Mustang, combining exciting performance, bold design, and comfort-enhancing technologies.”

The Mustang55 will be sold alongside the film-inspired Bullitt version, which recently had its production run extended into 2020. Pricing for the Mustang55 will be announced shortly.
