Ford has announced that it is introducing a new longer wheelbase version of its Transit Custom Nugget camper.
Based on the UK’s best-selling van, Ford introduced its ‘Nugget’ camper earlier this year in a single wheelbase, but later this year buyers will be able to order a longer model, which Ford says provides the length to offer a built-in toilet, wash basin and additional interior storage.
Developed in partnership with camper specialists Westfalia, the model offers a Ford-approved campervan solution for the growing number of campervan buyers – spurred on by the rise of the ‘staycation’ following the coronavirus pandemic.
The Transit Custom Nugget features a tilting roof for greater access to places with height restrictions, which opens up to allow for a sleeping area with a double bed.
It also comes with an L-shaped interior layout, with its kitchenette and living and dining area, along with travelling seats when on the move. Fresh and waste water is also catered for with two on-board tanks. An in-built Wi-Fi hotspot also allows 10 devices to connect to its hotspot.
The Nugget uses Ford’s 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, which is available with either 128bhp or 182bhp. Both manual and automatic transmissions are available.
Hans Schep, general manager of commercial vehicles, Ford of Europe, said: “From weekend getaways to staycation holidays with the whole family, we’re seeing growing demand for the adventure and freedom that campers provide.
“Nugget lets customers enjoy light-filled, spacious living when parked up, and the additional features that come with the longer wheelbase model add to the ‘home-from-home’ experience.”
There’s no word on pricing yet, but expect a slight increase on the standard Nugget’s £59,600 price. Order books for the long wheelbase model are set to open in November, with first deliveries expected at the start of 2021.
