Ford introduces new ‘Smart Mirror’ for Transit models

High-tech system allows van drivers to more easily spot cyclists, pedestrians and other road users.

Ford has revealed a new ‘Smart Mirror’ system available for its Transit and Transit Custom vans.

It’s a way of helping van drivers spot cyclists, pedestrians and other vehicles that might be behind them - particularly when driving a Transit with a solid bulkhead or windowless rear doors.

It works by showing a live feed from a camera mounted on the back of the van, which is then displayed in real-time inside the rear-view mirror. It features automatic brightness control for the best visibility either during the day or at night, and offers a field of view that is twice as wide as that of a conventional rear-view mirror.

Owen Gregory, director, commercial vehicle aftersales, Ford of Europe, said: “Providing our drivers with maximum visibility – especially in urban areas where there is so much to look out for – increases their confidence and is a key part of making journeys safer for them, and for other road users as well.”

Ford says that its new mirror system could be particularly useful for those drivers who make frequent drop-offs in cities where bikes, e-scooters or pedestrians are a more frequent occurrence.

The mirror, which will cost close to £675, is available for Transit and Transit Custom models fitted with windowless rear doors. Fully fitted by a Ford dealer, it’s compatible with Transit vans built from 2014, or Transit Custom models from 2012.
