The new crossover particularly impressed the judges with its driving position.

The all-new Ford Puma has been named 2020 Car of the Year by motoring magazine What Car?, just ahead of first deliveries of the brand’s new crossover.

Reviving a nameplate that was last used on a Fiesta-based coupe in the early 2000s, the new Puma becomes Ford’s fourth high-riding model, joining the Ecosport, Kuga and Edge.

While the new Puma was up against some stiff competition from the likes off the Skoda Scala, Tesla Model 3 and Range Rover Evoque, this new car impressed with its clever packaging, enjoyable driving experience and impressive real-world technology thanks to the introduction of mild-hybrid powertrains.

What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “As a small SUV, the Ford Puma competes in one of the fastest-growing sectors of the car market. Crucially, it also excels in all the areas that are important to buyers, according to our research.

“Thanks to its sharp handling, gutsy engine and clever mild hybrid technology, it offers a mix of fun and frugality not previously seen among its competitors. Plus, it’s as practical as it is stylish. In short, the Ford Puma is truly outstanding.”

Within its own Small SUV category, the Puma managed to fend off the likes of the Skoda Kamiq and Audi Q2.

The new Puma has recently gone on sale, with prices starting from £20,845, with a host of 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engines available from launch – with a 123bhp option available with or without mild-hybrid tech, and a 153bhp version featuring it as standard.

Further diesel and automatic variants will be available from later in the year, along with a new ST-Line X Vignale trim level.
