Ford’s new invention lets cyclists share their emotions with drivers

LED jacket gives cyclists a channel to communicate visually with drivers, including the ability to indicate and display hazard warnings.

Ford has showcased a new jacket that allows cyclists to share their emotions visually with drivers.

Featuring a panel of LEDs stitched into the back of the jacket, cyclists will be able to communicate that they are happy or frustrated through the means of an emoji with a driver without having to take focus away from the road ahead.

Its controlled by a wireless remote fixed to the handlebars on the cycle for easy access, with the jacket also able to be used as an indicator and display hazard warning lights.

Neil Cohn, a supposed ‘emoji expert’, said: “Emojis have become a fundamental part of how we use language. Whether used to convey facial expressions, humour, or sarcasm, they have become integral to our ability to express ourselves and quickly. This jacket created in partnership with Ford Share the Road allows riders to express their feelings and creates an important emotional link between them and other road users.”

It’s unlikely the jacket will enter production, but the concept certainly makes for interesting reading.
