After Honda joined the Italian F1 team Toro Rosso as engine suppliers for the 2018 season, drivers Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley chose the new hot hatch as their company car.

After Honda joined Formula One team Toro Rosso as its engine supplier for the 2018 season, both its drivers have been given their own Honda road car.

Both Frenchman Pierre Gasly and New Zealander Brendon Hartley chose the latest iteration of the Honda Civic Type R as their vehicle of choice when not sat in the cockpit of the STR13 during race weekends.

The hot hatchback is described as a ‘race car for the road’ by Honda and under the bonnet of the Type R is a 315bhp, turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that helps get it from 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 169mph.

On receiving his car, Hartley said: “Would you believe it, my first ever road car was a 1996 model year Honda Civic.

“So it’s nice to get the upgrade to the Type R. The only downside is that, with 21 Grands Prix and the really busy F1 schedule away from the track, I won’t get to drive it as much as I’d like.”

Frenchman Gasly said: “I am very lucky to have a Type R as my daily car. I’m excited to try it out on the iconic Route Napoleon in the South of France, and maybe even on a racetrack where I will really be able to push the limit.”

Prices for the Honda Civic Type R start from £31,525.
