Here’s the 2017 Honda Civic Type R in production form

Honda has revealed details and images of its new Civic Type R hot hatch in production form for the first time at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The car looks very much like the concept version we were shown last year.

Production of the new Type R is expected to start at Honda’s UK plant in Swindon during this summer, with deliveries following during the autumn.

Under the bonnet of the new Type R is a 2.0-litre VTEC turbocharged petrol engine – a revised version of the unit used in the previous Honda hot hatch. The engine now has 10bhp extra, giving it 316bhp in total, and there’s now also 400Nm of torque on offer. A six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive is also utilised.

Other features of the new Type R include adaptive dampers and a driving mode selector with settings that include ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and the track-focused ‘R+’

Details like the 0-62mph sprint time and top speed have not been disclosed, but Honda are eyeing up the Nurburgring lap record for the quickest front-wheel drive production car. The previous Type R held this record at one time, but the Volkswagen Golf Clubsport currently holds the honour with a lap time 1.4 seconds quicker than the previous Type R.

In regards the price, the new Type R will reportedly start from around £32,000 when it arrives in showrooms.
