Here’s the 2017 SsangYong Rexton SUV

SsangYong has officially revealed its new Rexton large SUV at this year’s Seoul Motor Show. It will be available in the UK in five and seven-seat configurations and it’s expected to launch here during this autumn.

It was rumoured prior to its reveal that SsangYong’s new large SUV would carry the Rexton name and the official reveal in Seoul confirms that to be the case. SsangYong has been using the Rexton name for SUV models since 2001.

The new SsangYong Rexton will rival the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Skoda Kodiaq and the Ford Edge and will be one of the biggest cars in its class.

Quite a few of the design features of the exterior and interior take inspiration from SsangYong’s modern compact crossover, the Tivoli. Inside, there’s a new eight-inch infotainment system as standard, which can be upgraded to a 9.2-inch display.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility will be available too, along with Nappa leather, dual-zone climate control and an around-view monitor to aid parking.

A new four-wheel drive system is used and it is a standard feature of the new Rexton. The powertrain will only drive the rear wheels most of the time, only diverting power to the front wheels when conditions get slippery.

Engines will include a 2.2-litre turbodiesel offering 182bhp and 420Nm of torque, meaning it has a little more power and torque than the 2.2-litre diesel found in the current Rexton. Most specifications will use a seven-speed automatic transmission but entry-level models will reportedly utilise a six-speed manual ‘box.

Pricing has yet to be confirmed for the new Rexton, but it’s expected to start from below £30,000 to undercut the majority of its rivals, although higher-spec versions will likely go over that amount.
