Hyundai KONA Electric has 10-month waiting list

The zero-emission crossover has proved so popular that customers will have to wait almost a year before getting hold of one.

Those wanting Hyundai’s zero-emission KONA Electric could have to wait up to 10 months for delivery due to high demand.

Priced from £32,795 following the government’s plug-in grant, the KONA Electric comes with 300 miles of range and more than 500 orders have been placed for the model in the UK – with more than 7,000 Norwegian customers also placing orders, according to a Hyundai spokesperson.

This surprising amount of interest for the crossover means that people who order a KONA Electric now will have to wait until August 2019 before getting behind the wheel.

This may mean that drivers looking to buy an electric family car next will be looking at Tesla’s Model 3, which is due to come to the UK in mid-2019 and comes with 220 miles in its base-level, £35,000 spec.

According to electric car blog InsideEVs: “It seems the Tesla Model 3 will now arrive in the UK sooner than the Hyundai KONA Electric due to a huge delivery delay for the KONA. This could be a big win for Tesla and an unfortunate loss for Hyundai.”

That, however, is based on if you had already ordered a Tesla Model 3, so you may still be better off going for the Hyundai.

More than 50 KONA EVs have been sent to UK customers so far, while right-hand drive versions of the Tesla Model 3 are still to be delivered.
