Hyundai Kona N revealed as new 276bhp hot crossover

The Kona N is the brand’s first sporty SUV.

Hyundai has expanded its performance ‘N’ division with the unveiling of a hot new version of its Kona.

Set to offer the ‘fun-to-drive feeling of Hyundai N models with the uncompromising versatility of an SUV’, the Kona N features a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine under the bonnet, which kicks out 275bhp and 392Nm of torque. Combined with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, it can reach 0-60mph in just 5.3 seconds thanks to an ‘N Power Shift’ mode that aims to provide extra thrust when upshifting. A top speed of 149mph is possible, too.

Other settings available include ‘N Grin Shift’ which provides maximum performance for 20 seconds to provide additional boost and enable the car’s full potential. A third ‘N Track Sense Shift’ mode is designed for the track, and delivers a greater focus on the steering. Elsewhere, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential enables torque to be split between the front wheels for maximum grip.

To stand out from the standard Kona, the sporty Kona N gets a menacing bodykit, including new lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels, a double-roof spoiler and a new Sonic Blue colour to choose from. A host of blue accents also separate it from the standard car.

Inside, the Kona N gets sports seats and a range of N-branded features, including to the steering wheel and handbrake. The cabin also gets Alcantara sports seats.

The new Ford Puma ST rival joins an ever-growing range of N and N-Line models from Hyundai, with the line-up set to expand to 18 by 2022. Though pricing is yet to be announced, the Kona N is likely to start from around £31,000 when first deliveries begin later this year.
