Hyundai teases hot new Kona N crossover

The Kona will be the third Hyundai to get the ‘N’ treatment

Hyundai has near enough revealed its new Kona N performance crossover in a series of new teaser images.

The hot new model will be the third Hyundai to get the ‘N’ treatment for the UK market – following on from the i30 and upcoming i20 – and is also the first SUV-style model that will be offered in this sporty guise.

The revealing images show the model’s aggressive styling, red accents (a trademark feature on N models) and redesigned front end incorporating new bonnet slats and a tweaked grille.

But it’s the rear that appears to be subject to the most changes, including its bold new double-wing spoiler, which incorporates a cool triangular top brake light. The pictures also show large exhaust pipes – emphasising the Kona N’s sporty character. Elsewhere, Hyundai says it comes with larger alloy wheels, sporty side sills and a large rear diffuser.

Technical details about the new Kona N remain quite thin on the ground, but this crossover is expected to favour the larger 247bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine from the i30 N, rather than the i20 N’s smaller 1.6-litre unit. It’s also likely to just be sold with an automatic gearbox.

The Kona has until recently been Hyundai’s baby crossover – the smaller Bayon will now take this place on the mantle – but is renowned for its electrified options, with Hyundai selling the model as a hybrid or an EV, the latter boasting an impressive 300-mile electric range. This sporty N model is likely to show a new side to this crossover, then.

Further details about the new Kona N are expected to be revealed shortly, with the model set to arrive in showrooms before the end of the year.
