Hyundai teases new i20 N during winter testing

The sporty hot hatch has been inspired by the firm’s rally cars

Hyundai has shown the official teaser images of its new i20 N hot hatch as the model undergoes winter testing.

The new i20 is only the third Hyundai model to get the ‘N’ treatment, and follows on from the larger i30 N hatchback and Veloster coupe (not sold in the UK).

An official video and images show the new hot hatch testing in Arjeplog, Sweden, which is a popular location for manufacturers to push their new models to the extremes. The model can be seen testing alongside one of the firm’s rally cars, as well as the mid-engined RM19 prototype.

The new car is heavily disguised in the images, and gives little away, though the video shows a rather raucous-sounding model. It has been driven by Hyundai World Rally Championship (WRC) driver Thierry Neuville.

The new model will be the first sporty i20 model for the road, though the manufacturer has been competing in WRC with cars based on the outgoing model for some time. Little is known about the new N model, though Hyundai says that more details about its new hot hatch will be revealed soon.

Hyundai pulled the wraps off the regular version of the new i20 in February, with the car introducing completely altered styling, class-leading safety kit and new mild-hybrid powertrains. It’s expected to arrive in showrooms later in 2020, with the N model set to arrive in 2021.
