Insignia GSi becomes fastest Vauxhall at Nürburgring

The upcoming sporty saloon beat the previous record held by the Insignia VXR by 12 seconds

The Vauxhall Insignia GSi has become the brand’s fastest car around the legendary Nürburgring circuit.

Lighter and lower than the previous fastest model – the Insignia VXR – the GSi beat the previous record by 12 seconds.

Coming with all-wheel drive, torque vectoring, a sporty chassis setup, Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, the Insignia GSi has a variety of sporty features to make it faster than before.

Fitted with a 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine, it is paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox to provide speedy changes and drivers can choose from four driving modes – Standard, Tour, Sport and Competition, which is exclusive to the GSi model. You are even able to turn the traction control off to allow more slip and have more fun on the track.

Led by Vauxhall’s director of performance cars and motorsport, Volker Strycek, the development team managed to make this both the fastest and most efficient Vauxhall currently in the line-up.

Strycek said: “The lightweight architecture, excellent chassis configuration and unique all-wheel drive system, along with the performance tyres make the GSi as precise and sharp as we wanted it to be.

“The results speak for themselves, and the new Insignia GSi can lap the Nürburgring up to 12 seconds faster than its more powerful VXR predecessor. Where the course becomes more demanding and requires the car to react with more agility and precision, such as in the corners or stretches with low friction, the GSi is definitely faster and easy to control.”

The Insignia GSi will be available in both Grand Sport and Sport Tourer guises, with models coming to showrooms next year.
