Jaguar Land Rover unveils ‘steering wheel of the future’

The manufacturing pairing shows off its vision of the future.

The future of motoring is always in the minds of car designers and Jaguar Land Rover’s designers have been hard at work coming up with an ultramodern steering wheel.

Called Sayer, it is the first voice-activated steering wheel with artificial intelligence and rather than being attached to a single car at a time, it will be able to work in any Jaguar Land Rover vehicle.

That’s because JLR thinks the ownership of vehicles will be between groups and communities and car sharing will be the way forward. So rather than you solely owning the vehicle, you will buy the steering wheel that works with any car that can be summoned on demand by Sayer.

With the help of Sayer’s AI, you will be able to organise which type of vehicle you need and where you need to go, as JLR also sees many vehicles in the future being controlled by autonomous technology.

This unique piece of equipment is named after one of Jaguar’s former designers, Malcolm Sayer, who worked for the British manufacturer between 1951 and 1970.

Sayer is being displayed as part of the Jaguar Land Rover Tech Fest at Central Saint Martins College in London on 8, 9 and 10 September, where the manufacturing group will be showing off the latest in motoring technology and what the future may hold for the automotive industry.

If you’re imagining that cars in the future will resemble something out of Knightrider, you may not be far off.
