So while you might see a range of front-wheel-drive models wearing a Jeep badge these days, they still look as capable as ever, while a line-up of seriously capable off-roaders are still available.
This year is an especially important one for Jeep as the brand marks an impressive 80 years of business, with its line-up being more diverse than ever – even including plug-in hybrids. Let’s take a look at what the Jeep range has to offer…
Renegade – from £23,405
The most compact of all of Jeep’s models, the Renegade is a small crossover that’s an ideal alternative to more run-of-the-mill models like the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur. With its chunky styling, it certainly stands out on the road, while it also has a practical interior and surprisingly affordable running costs thanks to its turbocharged petrol engines.
It also comes with a generous amount of standard equipment included, while an 80th Anniversary model is also currently available, bringing revised styling elements inside and out to mark the brand’s history.
Renegade 4xe – from £32,600
But the Renegade isn’t just available with petrol engines as the firm also offers the 4xe – the brand’s first and also the only plug-in hybrid currently available. With its combination of petrol-electric power, it produces either 187bhp or a punchy 237bhp in top-spec configurations, while a 30-mile electric range brings the possibility of very affordable running costs – Jeep claims sub-50g/km CO2 emissions and a fuel economy figure of 134mpg.
If you want a Renegade to off-roading in, you’ll also want the 4xe, as these are the only models that come with four-wheel-drive, with the electric motor delivering impressive traction when the going gets tough – particularly with the range-topping Trailhawk model.
Compass – from £27,125
Sitting in the middle of the Jeep range is the Compass, an ideal family-sized crossover that brings chunky styling, generous equipment levels and a practical interior. Though not the most obvious choice in this class, it’s worth a look if you’d like something more different to the regular options.
And though front-wheel-drive cars are available, don’t underestimate just how capable the Compass is in the right trim level. That’s because you can get it in Trailhawk trim, which brings a raised suspension setup, additional off-roading modes and greater underbody protection that makes it one of the most rugged models available in this class.
Wrangler – from £48,920
But if you want the ultimate off-roader, there’s only one Jeep to choose – the iconic Wrangler. It’s the model that gets closest to the brand’s original Willys Jeep, with its funky and traditional styling still drawing in plenty of punters today.
Though still rugged and utilitarian, the Wrangler has a more upmarket interior and is packed with both in-car and safety technology today. You can choose it in both two- and four-door form, while an 80th Anniversary Model will really appeal to the Jeep purists – bringing with it a range of bespoke elements to set it apart from other Wranglers.
