Lamborghini Urus SUV will be powered by 650bhp V8, plug-in version coming

The upcoming Lamborghini Urus SUV will be powered by a 650bhp twin turbocharged V8 engine and will also come with the option of a plug-in hybrid version.

It’s been known for some time now that Lambo’s been hard at work trying to bring the Urus to market after the car was first unveiled in concept form all the way back in 2012.

However, new comments from the Italian manufacturer’s CEO Stefano Domenicali sheds new light on what to expect from Lamborghini’s first attempt at making an SUV in over 30 years.

With 650bhp, the Urus will be significantly more powerful than similar performance SUVs from its sister Volkswagen Group manufacturers, like the Porsche Macan Turbo and Bentley Bentayga.

It’s been known for some time that it would be powered by a turbocharged V8 engine, but the exact power figure was still a mystery. Not much is known about the plug-in version, but it’s possible it could use the same V8 paired with an electric motor and battery pack.

The car will be unveiled in full towards the end of the year and will be built at Lamborghini’s factory in Sant’Agata alongside the Huracan and Aventador supercars.

It’s expected to be an important car for the company, with Lamborghini expecting to build 1,000 Urus models next year and 3,500 per year from 2019 onwards. Last year, Lamborghini sold a record number of 3,457 cars worldwide.

Lamborghini will also create its first paint shop in its history for the Urus, after previously outsourcing its paintwork to external suppliers.

The new Lamborghini Urus SUV is expected to go on sale towards the second half of next year, with prices estimated to start from around £170,000.
