Land Rover reveals Discovery SVX

The souped-up Discovery comes with a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine and is the first in the SVX range

British manufacturer Land Rover has unveiled the first model in a new line from its Special Vehicle Operations department – the Discovery SVX.

The SVX arm is the latest addition to the SVO department and it joins the SVR and SVAutobiography lines.

SVX’s first project is based on the latest Discovery model. It is fitted with a 517bhp, 5.0-litre, supercharged V8 engine and is paired with a specially engineered eight-speed automatic transmission. It also comes with an improved setup for optimised off-roading including a raised ride height and modifications to the air suspension system.

The exterior design looks more rugged than the standard Discovery thanks to front and rear skid plates and forged aluminium alloys that are wrapped in Goodyear all-terrain tyres. The model is also adorned in satin grey paint with orange accents and black detailing.

To ensure off-roading excellence, the Discovery SVX comes with an optimised version of the Terrain Response 2 system – which allows drivers to choose how the car drives in different conditions – and a new setup called Hydraulic Active Roll Control that helps with traction and controlling body roll.

John Edwards, Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations managing director, said: “SVO designers and engineers are embedded within the Land Rover team and have unleashed their own passion for adventure to create another truly desirable and versatile vehicle in the Land Rover line-up.”

Land Rover’s chief design officer Gerry McGovern added: “The combination of design excellence and engineering integrity inherent in every Land Rover is the foundation of everything we do.

“The Discovery SVX reinforces Land Rover’s unrivalled reputation for building vehicles with true all-terrain capability for customers who desire the ultimate in off-road performance.”

The model was officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12.
