Londoners most at risk of buying written off cars

A recent study has found that the risk of buying a previously written-off vehicle is greater in London than in any other city in Britain.

The vehicle provenance check provider My Car Check analysed its data by city to determine where the most popular areas are for used cars being sold that have previously been written off at some point in their life.

This analysis found that nearly one in every four vehicles (24.75 per cent) checked in London had been written off at some point in its life. Birmingham is close behind, with 23.84 per cent.

The top three is rounded off by the city of Liverpool, where 20.6 per cent of the vehicles checked had previously been damaged enough to be written off.

Cities less likely to sell written off cars also revealed

In contrast, it was found that the cities of Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow are the places where you’re least likely to find a vehicle for sale that has been previously written off. Less than 15 per cent of vehicles checked in each of these cities were found to have such a history.

The head of My Car Check, Roger Powell, said: “Buying a car is a big deal and establishing whether it has ever been written-off is vital. Even leaving the safety aspect aside, a write-off will usually be worth considerably less than a similar non-accident-damaged model.

“It is incredible that so many people still don’t realise it is legal for certain write-offs to return to the road. In fact, it is not unusual for a car to have been involved in several accidents.”
