Lynk & Co to build vehicles at Volvo’s Belgium plant

The brand, which is targeted at younger buyers, will begin producing its 01 model at Volvo’s Ghent factory.

Geely-owned brand Lynk & Co will be producing its first model – the 01 – at Volvo’s Ghent-based factory in Belgium.

Volvo – also owned by Chinese brand Geely – will provide the Compact Modular Architecture base for the new car, with the Swedish firm also supplying the chassis for further models.

2019 Lynk & Co 01 crossover

The 01 units destined for the European market will be built on the same production line as the Volvo XC40 from 2019.

Alain Visser, Lynk & Co senior vice president, said: “We will manufacture in Europe, for Europe, focussing initially on hybrid-only electrified derivatives of our new range of cars.

“Our vehicles share the innovative Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) with Volvo, therefore it makes absolute sense that we commence European production for Lynk & Co alongside a brand with the absolute trustmark and global recognition in safety, quality, design and international appeal. We could not wish for a better start in our home markets.”

2019 Lynk & Co 01 crossover

Founded in 2016, Lynk & Co has pitched itself as a direct-to-consumer manufacturer, which will be using online ordering and a subscription ownership layout for its vehicles.

The 01 will be the brand’s first production vehicle, and the crossover is hoping to put the Sweden-based firm on the motoring map.

Lynk & Co has branded itself as always being connected and technologically-advanced, and the 01 will come with a large touchscreen, a telematics system and an internet connection.

All Lynk & Co models will also come with electrified powertrain options.
