Mazda celebrates centenary with new special edition models

Limited-edition versions of the MX-5, CX-30 and ‘3’ will be offered in the UK

To celebrate Mazda’s centenary this year, the firm has announced a range-wide line-up of special edition models.

Originally set to be shown at last month at the cancelled Geneva Motor Show, the anniversary versions have only now been unveiled.

While 100th anniversary editions will be available worldwide for the full range, initially the UK is set to just be offered the MX-5 roadster, new CX-30 crossover and the latest ‘3’ hatchback. Only 100 of each will be introduced over here.

The special models all adopt a white and burgundy two-tone colour scheme to both the exterior and interior, which are cues taken from Mazda’s first passenger car – the R360 Coupe.

The exact colour in question is called Snowflake White Pearlescent and contrasts with burgundy interior carpet and matching-coloured leather seats. Special badging also appears on the headrests, floormats and key fob. The MX-5 drop-top also features a Dark Cherry fabric roof.

Mazda’s origins kickstart with founder Jujiro Matsuda, who started a foundry company 100 years ago, before leading the firm into machinery manufacturer – something that lead it to the Mazda we know today. The R360, its first model, was introduced in 1960.

The anniversary models of the MX-5, CX-30 and ‘3’ will be introduced later in the year, with pricing and specifications still to be announced – though the models are highly likely to be based on the range-topping grades.

Mazda says that 100th versions of the ‘6’ saloon and Tourer and CX-5 SUV are also being considered for the UK. Other markets will also get limited-run versions of the Mazda supermini, hard-top MX-5 RF and large CX-8 SUV – the latter not being sold in the UK.

Mazda UK managing director, Jeremy Thomson, said: “Mazda has created these special models as a token of appreciation for the customers who have supported us through the years. We’ll be proud to have special versions of the MX-5 Convertible, CX-30 and Mazda3 in our UK showrooms later this year.”

The centenary editions will remain on sale until March 2021.
