McLaren 570S super sports car debuts in New York

McLaren has revealed its first sports car, the 570S Coupe, at this year’s New York Motor Show. Sitting below the more powerful 650S and P1 in the McLaren range, this new model will cost from £143,250 and goes on sale later this year.

Even though the 570S is slower than the 650S, its main rivals are set to include the Audi R8 V10 Plus and the Porsche 911 Turbo S. These two German supercars are both similarly priced to McLaren’s newest model.

Like the 650S, the new 570S will be powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbo petrol V8, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, but the power output is now at 562bhp. That’s 79bhp less than the 650S, but the new McLaren can still cover the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.2 seconds – just two tenths of a second less than the 650S - while its top speed is 204mph.

The lightweight construction of the 570S is a key ingredient behind its impressive performance figures. It uses the same carbon fibre chassis as the 650S but it’s modified so that its 17kg lighter than before. This change, plus the use of aluminium body panels, has led McLaren to claim the 570S is ‘almost 150kg lighter than its closest competitor’.

While still boasting incredible performance figures, the 570S is noticeably more practical than any other prior model launched by McLaren, boasting more cabin and luggage space comparatively.

The 570S is also a little more efficient, returning a combined fuel economy figure of 25.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 258g/km. That’s 1.4mpg greater and 17g/km less compared to the 650S.

Later this month McLaren are expected to reveal its new entry-level model called the 540C, which will have less power than the 570S but will start pricing from around £126,000.
