McLaren 720S: New 710bhp supercar revealed early

The McLaren 720S, the replacement for the 650S, has been revealed earlier than planned as an image of the supercar has leaked online prior its public debut at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.

McLaren has not actually officially announced the name of its second-generation entry for its Super Series range of cars. But the leaked image not only confirms the name of the 720S, but also design details such as the deployable rear spoiler acting as an air-brake, the large scissor doors and sizeable side air intakes.

The name refers to the fact the supercar produces 720 metric horsepower (or 720PS), which when converted to brake horsepower is 710bhp in total. Power comes from a new 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 engine, which represents a major step forward in performance over the 641bhp V8 used in the 650S.

A big change to the interior compared to previous McLaren supercars is the new type of digital instrument display found behind the steering wheel. This is called the Folding Driver Display and it’s a swivelling digital instrument binnacle which offers two different ways of viewing information.

The driver can either have “Full Display Mode” with a large screen showing digital dials in similar fashion to how Audi’s Virtual Cockpit display is setup. Alternatively, there’s the “Slim Display Mode” which tucks most information away behind the wheel and shows only vital info on a thin strip.

The McLaren’s cabin also features an 8-inch infotainment screen at the centre, as well as sat-nav, leather upholstery and some carbon fibre detailing.

More details on McLaren’s new supercar will be confirmed during the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
