McLaren Automotive celebrate building its 15,000th unit

Since the company’s founding in 2010, McLaren Automotive has become one of the world’s leading sports car brands.

British sports car brand McLaren Automotive has now built over 15,000 cars, just 18 months after the 10,000th unit was produced.

This comes just seven years after the company began manufacturing at its Woking-based production centre, and eight years after the road-going branch of the Formula One team was founded.

Due to high global demand for the company’s models, McLaren introduced a second production shift in 2016 that doubled daily output from 10 to 20 cars – with 90 per cent of the units built being shipped to global markets.

The 15,000th unit to be built was a 570S Spider from McLaren’s Sport Series – finished in Curacao Blue and was presented at McLaren Production Centre.

2017 saw record sales for the company after 3,340 units were sold, with two-thirds of sales contributed to the Sport Series and one-third to the Super Series. 2018 sees 500 units of the Senna Ultimate Series model also going into production.

Mike Flewitt, McLaren Automotive chief executive officer, said: “Reaching 15,000 cars built is a significant milestone for McLaren Automotive and comes under 18 months after we hit 10,000 vehicles, showing how demand and production have increased.

“The Sports Series has been pivotal to driving this growth, with the 570S Spider now the most popular of the range. The fact we are now able to produce 20 cars a day is of course a great testament to the hard work and dedication of every one of our workforce, who should feel justifiably proud and part of this great team effort.”
