McLaren sales gather pace

The folks at McLaren’s car division have taken a break from the wind tunnel to announce its financial results from 2014.

McLaren Automotive’s supercars may be renowned for their performance on the road, but its sales performance is pretty spectacular as well. In 2014 1,649 of the ultra-exclusive vehicles were delivered to customers and the company returned a £15m pre-tax profit.

Considering the first McLaren retailer only opened four years ago, two consecutive years of profit in 2013 and 2014 are evidence that it’s off to a flying start. £91.8m of investment into R&D in 2014 should also ensure more new models like the McLaren 675LT grace our roads in the near future.

Of the total cars sold in 2014, 1,401 came from the core McLaren Automotive range, made up of the 650S Coupe and 650S Spider convertible. The McLaren P1 hypercar with 903bhp and 2.8 second 0-62mph acceleration made up 248 sales, with the remainder of the limited 375 units to be sold in 2015.

With a new and more accessible range of Sports Series models on their way, including the McLaren 570S Coupe and 540C Coupe arriving in 2015, a growing number of new customers are expected and McLaren is hoping to double its annual production in Woking, Surrey to 4,000 units.

McLaren retailers now cover 30 markets, with the most recent additions including Scotland, Chile and Thailand. Most sales are accounted for by the North American market (over 30 per cent of sales), while sales in Europe and the Middle East are buoyant. The Asia-Pacific, however, saw the most rapid growth of 80 per cent in 2013.
