Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2018: New vs Old compared

Mercedes-Benz has updated the new A-Class and it's jam packed with incredible tech and cool new features. But how does it compare with the previous model?

As one of the top premium hatchbacks, the Mercedes A-Class offers a quality product for the younger driver who need practicality with a small footprint.

But with the introduction of the new model on the horizon, the A-Class range is getting a technological step-up with the fourth-generation that will see the model improve leaps and bounds.

But what are the main differences between the old and new versions? We take a look…

A fresh design

The old version of the A-Class was starting to look tired towards the end of last year, and when the new model was unveiled in February, it was much sharper and in keeping with the brand’s latest design ethos.

The design change is more of an evolution rather than the revolutionary third-generation, but this new A-Class is sportier and pointier – making for a smart hatchback. However, there are major changes inside the vehicle, as Mercedes has given the model a sleeker design that incorporates the new infotainment screens and easy-to-use equipment. Talking of which…

Impressive, all-new technology

The A-Class is now, arguably, the most advanced hatchback on sale and that is down to two key pieces of kit. The first is the Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system, which uses artificial intelligence to learn the habits of the user to make it simpler to navigate as well as the ‘Hey Mercedes!’ voice control system.

Another great addition is the augmented reality navigation display, which overlays arrows and guidance instructions over the top of images of junctions to ensure you stay on the right path. The navigation comes up on the dashboard-mounted screens, which can be as large as 10.25-inch when the Premium equipment line is selected.

More space than before

With a larger wheelbase and body, the new A-Class offers 29 litres more load space in the rear, more passenger space and improved openings for the boot and doors. That makes the A-Class much more practical than before while only using a small amount more road space.

Safety equipment is also improved

As standard, A-Class models will come with both active brake assist and lane-keeping assist, while other systems are available throughout the various trim levels – such as speed limit assist, high-beam assist and active parking assist. That helps to make the fourth-generation model one of the safest premium hatchbacks on the market.

A new saloon version is on its way

Although Mercedes offers plenty of saloons, it has decided it needs a new baby sedan in the guise of the A-Class Saloon. Unveiled at the Auto China 2018 show in Beijing in April, the saloon version will come with the same equipment and engine options as the hatchback, as well as a slightly higher list price.
