Mercedes-Benz CLA revealed

The compact saloon comes with new technology to match recent Mercedes models as well as improved practicality

Mercedes has taken the covers off the second generation CLA at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Based on the same platform as the A-Class, the CLA has grown compared to its last iteration and is now 48mm longer and 53mm wider – measuring 4688mm in length and 1830mm wide.

With an extended wheelbase, there is also more interior space for passengers – but rear boot space has been cut by 10 litres from the previous generation to 460 litres.

Much like the previous generation, the CLA comes with a sleek body shape but has a short boot to mark it out from the recently-introduced A-Class saloon.

From launch the new CLA will be fitted with the 250 petrol – a four-cylinder unit developing 223bhp and 350Nm of torque – that will be paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with a series of petrol and diesel units to be announced closer to the model’s release in May.

An AMG model is also likely to be unveiled in the near-future, with both front- and four-wheel drive options set to be included in the line-up.

Inside, the MBUX infotainment system is fitted – which debuted in the A-Class last year and features the voice-activated ‘Hey, Mercedes’ personal assistant.

Assistance systems found in the S-Class will also be used in this model, such as emergency stop assist, distance assist, active lane change, brake assist, lane keep assist and pre-safe plus.

But as with the previous version of the CLA, a shooting brake option is likely to be offered and revealed later this year.
