Mitsubishi will reveal a new Qashqai-rivalling SUV soon

Online reports have found that Mitsubishi are planning to reveal an all-new SUV this March during the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Size-wise it will sit between the ASX and the Outlander and serve as a new rival to the dominant Nissan Qashqai.

While its name has yet to be revealed, the new Mitsubishi SUV will reportedly have some coupe-like styling features to help it stand out from the competition. The new SUV has also in all likelihood been designed by Tsunehiro Kunimoto, who Mitsubishi hired back in 2014 and who previously spent decades designing Nissans including the Juke crossover.

Traditionally, Mitsubishi SUVs such as the Outlander, Shogun and even the ASX have had a very boxy profile, but the reports on the upcoming model indicates that the Japanese brand wants to introduce more diverse shapes to their SUV line-up.

It’s reported that the all-new SUV will take some inspiration from the Mitsubishi XR-PHEV (seen above), a coupe-esque concept which was first revealed all the way back in 2013, before also appearing at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

However, while the XR-PHEV concept used a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and such an option is available for the latest Outlander, it’s believed that the new Mitsubishi SUV will not offer a hybrid option for cost reasons.

Instead, a turbocharged petrol engines and a range of diesels are likely to be offered with Mitsubishi’s new SUV and both front-wheel and four-wheel drive set-ups will be included.
