Dashcam sales have doubled in the past year, with consumers aiming to drive down insurance costs

Dashcams are often associated with footage of crazy Russian drivers, but they can also be used to lower your insurance costs by up to 20 per cent.

Sales of the cameras have doubled in the past year, as many drivers look to the devices as a way of framing crash-for-cash scammers and driving down insurance premiums.

Footage from dashcams is already being used widely to settle liability disputes between drivers, with one-in-ten vehicles now fitted with the recording device.

Several insurers are now offering significant discounts for cars fitted with dashcams. Insurance provider Sure Thing has been giving customers 20 per cent off their premiums if they fit the devices, while Admiral Insurance has said that that it had not taken a single case to court where dash-cam footage had been involved.

Halfords has recorded a 104 per cent increase in dashcam sales in the past 12 months. Natasha Chauhan, of Halfords, told The Times: “We have seen a surge in sales as drivers reach for in-car technology to capture instances of careless driving, while also saving on their car insurance.

“Fitting a dashcam can help reduce the cost of cover and offer reassurance when it comes to disputes over liability in the event of an accident.”
