National lockdown forces car showrooms to close, but new cars can still be ‘click and collected’ and delivered

While Boris Johnson has ordered a nationwide lockdown, there are still ways you can buy a new car

Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday announced a third new lockdown in England, ordering the public to ‘stay at home’ for all but a small number of reasons.

And while many car showrooms across the country were already closed due to being in Tier 4, all dealerships are now having to close their doors to the public as all ‘non-essential’ retail has been ordered to shut to help combat the growing number of coronavirus cases.

But while you can’t go into a showroom and browse cars like in normal times, there are still options available if you need to buy a new car, with the government outlining that ‘vehicle showrooms’ are included in those businesses that can “continue to be able to operate click-and-collect and delivery services”.

This means you are able to buy a car, you’ll just need to buy it online or over the phone beforehand, and then you can either pick it up from the showroom or have it delivered to your home. All vehicles will be fully sanitised before being handed over, too, though no conventional test drives are allowed to be given.

A number of manufacturers are also offering ‘buy online’ functionality through their websites, including BMW, Citroen and Dacia.
