New Mercedes GLE SUV to debut in New York

The first official details and images have been released for the new Mercedes GLE - a large premium SUV which replaces the M-Class.

Featuring new technology and improved efficiency, the Mercedes GLE will make its public debut appearance at next week’s New York Motor Show. Rivals for the new Mercedes GLE will include the BMW X5 and Audi Q7.

The decision to rename the M-Class as the GLE is the result of a new naming strategy by Mercedes. From now on, each new Mercedes SUV and crossover model will start its name with the letter G, followed by the letter L. The one exception to this rule is the iconic G-Class.

The new GLE and G-Class are to be accompanied by the GLA crossover, the GLC (formerly GLK), the GLS (formerly GL) and the all-new GLE Coupe. The latter model, first revealed towards the end of last year, is designed more as a direct rival to the BMW X6.

The Mercedes GLE has a more traditional SUV appearance but features design changes over its predecessor including new LED taillights and headlamps with daytime running lights. Other design updates include new bumper protectors and new, lighter alloy wheels.

Engine options for the GLE will include a 201bhp 2.1-litre diesel and 254bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel for the 250D and 350D specifications. Both also use a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.1 diesel is the most efficient conventional unit in this SUV’s range, officially averaging 52.3mpg and emitting 140g/km of CO2.

Another powertrain for the GLE is an all-new plug-in hybrid variant for the 500E specification. It combines a 328bhp V6 petrol engine and 114bhp electric motor for a total output of 436bhp. Mercedes reports it can average 85.6mpg and emit just 78g/km in CO2. It can also travel for 18.5 miles on electric power alone.

The quickest specification for the new Mercedes GLE is the AMG 63 S which has a 5.5-litre V8 petrol engine. Compared to the M-Class AMG, power output is increased from 518bhp to 577bhp. The GLE AMG model will cover the 0-62mph sprint in just 4.2 seconds, which is 0.6 seconds quicker compared to the M-Class AMG.

Standard equipment for the Mercedes GLE includes stop-start engine technology, a handling adjustment computer and an infotainment system with a seven-inch display screen. Optional kit will include a parking pack and the ability to increase the infotainment screen size to eight inches.

No information has been released yet regarding pricing or the release date for the new Mercedes GLE. More is likely to be revealed, however, during the SUV’s reveal in New York next week.
