New Toyota RAV4 revealed with a bold new look

New version of Toyota's iconic RAV4 unveiled at New York International Auto Show.

Toyota has chosen the New York International Auto Show to reveal the latest generation of its RAV4 SUV. The popular crossover is credited by some to have started the family SUV craze back in 1994, but the latest model couldn’t be further from its roots.

Based on Toyota’s scalable vehicle platform, the new RAV4 takes its styling cues from the smaller C-HR – with angular bodywork, a snarling grille and bold LED head- and tail-lights. Its muscular stance apes the new Auris hatchback, too, which was revealed earlier this month at the Geneva Motor Show.

A longer wheelbase means Toyota’s been able to fit more passAenger space into the same length of car – giving rear passengers more legroom and improving the boot space.

Under the skin, UK consumers may be surprised to find there are no diesel options, as in so many crossovers of this size. Instead, in a bit to reject diesel fuel across Toyota’s passenger car range, the new RAV4 gets a choice of either a petrol or a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

No performance or economy figures have been released, but the lighter, more modern body should ensure improvements on both fronts. The current hybrid model returns 55mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 115g/km of CO2, while the petrol model emits 43.5mpg and 152g/km.

Order books for the new Toyota RAV4 are expected to open early next year.
