New turbo-only Porsche 911 range breaks cover

The latest generation version of the iconic Porsche 911 has been unveiled ahead of its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

Available to order in the UK now, priced between £76,412 and £94,698, every model in the updated 911 range is now turbocharged for the first time in its five-decade history.

As Porsche aims to phase out naturally aspirated engines across the line-up, the 911’s 3.0-litre rear-mounted flat-six engines now all come with twin-turbos to boost power and efficiency.

The base Carrera develops 365bhp, while the Carrera S has a total output of 414bhp, both of which represent a boost of 20bhp over the previous-generation models.

As a result, the 911 Carrera Coupe can sprint from 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 183mph. The S variant, meanwhile, is even quicker with a 3.9 second 0-62mph time and 191mph top speed.

Thanks to the turbocharger technology, Porsche claims that efficiency has been boosted by as much as 12 per cent; fuel economy clocks in at a maximum of 38.2mpg with CO2 emissions from 169g/km.

On the surface, Porsche has maintained the 911’s distinctive look with only subtle updates like revised headlights and a redesigned engine lid with air vents to cool the engine.

Inside, the updated 911 range gets a revised version of the Porsche Communication Management System infotainment suite with a seven-inch touchscreen, sat-nav and voice activated controls.

New features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection plus a smartphone tray and Apple CarPlay compatibility, while it can also support apps like Google Earth and StreetView.

Standard equipment across the board includes a leather interior, sports seats and dual-zone climate control, plus bi-xenon headlights, and an anti-theft tracking system.

Other updates to the range include a ride height that’s been lowered by 10mm and optional rear-active steering for the Carrera S to further improve handling dynamics.

Finally, the 911 range now also features a steering-mounted mode switch, which allows drivers to switch between Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual modes to alter the car’s setup to taste.

Priced from £76,412 for the base 911 Carrera Coupe, order books for the new Porsche 911 are open now, and first deliveries are expected to arrive for UK buyers from this December.
