New TVR to be built in Wales

The reborn British manufacturer TVR will build its new sports car at a production plant based in South Wales. The facility will be specifically based at the Ebbw Vale enterprise zone and will lead to the creation of 150 jobs.

New factory announcement

The First Minister of Wales, Rt. Hon Carwyn Jones, confirmed earlier today during a press conference that contracts had been signed a few days ago to locate TVR’s new factory in Wales. The Welsh Government will be investing in TVR, which is making a comeback nearly ten years after the company last produced a car.

The Chairman of TVR, Les Edgar, commented: “South Wales is becoming a major hub for automotive and motorsport technology and development and the area is a serious opportunity for business development and job creation.”

TVR’s comeback plan

TVR, a brand famous for lightweight sports cars with impressive straight-line speed, was purchased a few years ago by a British company led by entrepreneur Les Edgar. This followed several failed attempts by the previous owner, Nikolay Smolensky, to get the brand back to producing cars.

Last year, the first details of TVR’s comeback plan were outlined. In the long term, TVR aims to release four new models over the next ten years and make at least a few hundred cars a year.

The first car in TVR’s new line-up is due to arrive in 2017 and it’s a sleek, two-door coupe which has no official name yet. It has, however, received around 350 advance orders already.

The new TVR coupe will be powered by a Cosworth-sourced V8 engine and will use carbon technology provided by ex-Formula 1 designer Gordon Murray.
