Nissan reveals the 2018 Leaf

The second generation, all-electric hatchback will get displayed publically at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week

Nissan has taken the covers off its latest version of the world’s best-selling all-electric car.

The Leaf, which has been around since 2010, has received a well-earned update that includes a newly designed body, a higher range and an improved interior design.

The range has been increased to a theoretical 235 miles on one charge, with it taking only 40 minutes to charge up to 80 per cent of the battery’s capacity.

It also includes the latest version of the company’s e-Pedal innovation, which allows drivers to accelerate and brake with the same implement in normal driving situations. A brake pedal is fitted for harsher braking events.

Nissan will also fit the ProPILOT and ProPILOT Park systems, which both aim to make driving easier while on the go and when pulling into a parking space. The ProPILOT Park system can automatically manoeuvre the Leaf into a space by controlling the acceleration, braking and steering.

On the outside, this version of the Leaf is much sleeker than before with Nissan adding blue detailing as a signature feature for its electric vehicles and LED headlights. The interior has also received a complete redesign, with a seven-inch display that can display Apple CarPlay and Android Auto acting as the centrepiece.

Hiroto Saikawa, president and CEO of Nissan, said: “The new Nissan Leaf, with its improved autonomy range, combined with the evolution of autonomous drive technology, such as ProPILOT Park and the simple operation of the e-Pedal, strengthens Nissan’s EV leadership, as well as the expansion of EVs globally. It also has the core strengths that will be embodied by future Nissan models.”

The second-generation Leaf will have its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with it going on sale in the UK at the start of 2018.
