We compare the new compact MPV to its predecessor, which takes over from the second generation model next year.

Mercedes-Benz took the covers off the latest version of the B-Class family MPV at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.

The compact model not as popular on these shores as Mercedes would have liked, but the German brand is hoping the 2019 version can reinvigorate the MPV segment.

Modern design

Even though the base shape is very similar, the 2019 version comes with Mercedes-Benz new fascia that is a bit sharper and includes angled LED headlights – with the sportier design continuing across the bodywork. The rear-end of the third generation model includes the brand’s new rear lights, while there is a small roof spoiler.

The modernisation continues into the cabin, which can be fitted with a dual 10.25-inch widescreen display that runs the new MBUX infotainment system and includes a digital instrument screen. The cabin layout is also much simpler, as Mercedes has streamlined it to make it less cluttered with buttons and dials.

Updated technology

As you would expect with a model made seven years after its predecessor, the quality of the equipment has improved and it is much more advanced. The 2019 B-Class uses many of the same safety systems found in the current S-Class as part of the Intelligent Drive setup. Included in the Driving Assistance package is active distance assist, which is a semi-autonomous assistant that can adjust the car’s speed and help with route-specific situations. Active emergency stop assist and active lane change assist also feature in the pack.

Active brake assist comes as standard in the car to help prevent slow-speed collisions, while the optional Pre-Safe system ensures that occupants are secured before an imminent collision.

The MBUX infotainment setup features the artificial intelligence system “Hey Mercedes”, which with voice activation can be controlled by the driver to help organise their journeys and keep up to their lives.
