Polar charging network introduces contactless payment

BP Chargemaster-operated network is set to offer full support of contactless payment within 12 months.

BP Chargemaster has revealed plans to introduce contactless payment across its Polar EV charging network.

Previously accessible only via a Polar subscription and pay-as-you-go via an app, users of the chargers will be able to quickly and easily pay for charging with a contactless card or NFC-capable smartphone.

All new 50kW rapid and 150kW ultra-fast chargers introduced to the network will feature contactless support, with all existing fast-charging units set to be retrofitted with the technology over the next 12 months.

This news comes amidst ambitious expansion plans from BP Chargemaster for the Polar service. BP purchased Chargemaster in 2018, with the oil firm installing chargers at a number of its refilling stations.

It unveiled the 150kW fast chargers last month, with the goal of fitting 400 of these points by the end of 2021 — with 100 of those coming by the end of 2019. These points are said to be capable of charging compatible EVs with 100 miles of range in as little as 10 minutes.

Today, the Government revealed plans urging charging providers to offer contactless payment support across its networks by spring 2020 and said it is ‘prepared to intervene to ensure a good deal for consumers by using powers in the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act’.
