Porsche brings back flat-six petrol engine for 718 Cayman and Boxster GTS

The new sporty variants feature detuned engines from the Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4.

Porsche has announced that it will use its famed 4.0-litre flat-six engine on its latest 718 Cayman and Boxster GTS.

It’s the second time this has happened on the latest ‘718’ models, following on from the flagship Boxster Spyder and GT4 models.

Since Porsche switched from a six-cylinder unit in its ‘718’ series models to a four-pot, it has proven controversial with enthusiasts, with many criticising the smaller engine for its lack of character and quiet engine note.

Only losing out on 19bhp next to the most extreme 718 models, the new GTS variants feature a 395bhp 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine. It’s paired to a six-speed manual transmission delivering its power to the rear wheels, with each being able to accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 182mph.

Performance features fitted to the GTS variants include adaptive sports suspension, torque vectoring and a mechanical limited-slip differential. A sports exhaust from the GT4 is also used on these GTS variants, too.

To separate it from other 718 Boxster and Cayman variants, the GTS features dark styling accents, as well as tinted front and rear lights. Large 20-inch alloy wheels are also fitted. As for the interior, Alcantara is used across the cabin, including on the seats, steering wheel and armrests, while also covering the roof lining.

An optional GTS interior package can also be chosen to have contrasting red or grey accents on places like the seat belts and rev counter.

Both models are available to order now, with the 718 Cayman GTS being priced from £64,088, and the 718 Boxster GTS available from £65,949. It works out roughly £10,000 more expensive than the ‘S’ model, but £10,000 cheaper than the Boxster Spyder and Cayman GT4.
