Porsche officially unveils the new 718 Cayman

Hot on the heels of the new 718 Boxster, Porsche has officially unveiled the first images and specifications for the 718 Cayman coupe.

Like its soft-top counterpart, the Cayman has ditched its much-loved flat-six engine in favour of a new turbocharged boxer four, available in two sizes and states of tune identical to the Boxster.

The entry-level Cayman comes with a 295bhp 2.0-litre engine, while the more powerful and more expensive Cayman S features a 2.4-litre motor with 345bhp.

New four-cylinder turbo engines

Both engines come with Porsche’s variable-vane turbocharger technology, which minimises turbo lag to deliver full power from just 1,950rpm. As a result, even the standard Cayman can hit 0-62mph in just 4.5 seconds.

The Cayman S, meanwhile, can cover the same benchmark sprint in just 4.0 seconds flat, while top speeds clock in at 170mph for the entry-level Cayman and 177mph for the Cayman S.

A six-speed manual gearbox is standard fit across the range, but buyers can also specify Porsche’s PDK seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Economy figures clock in at a claimed 38mpg, while CO2 emissions are a reasonable 168g/km.

Given that even the base model is now 33bhp more powerful than the previous version, the Cayman range has had its braking systems uprated with larger brake rotors at both the front and back.

The standard Cayman retains the same brakes as the last-gen model, but the Cayman S now gets the same four-piston callipers as the 911 Carrera, along with thicker brakes at the front.

Stiffer suspension improves the car’s grip and stability at speed, while the steering rack on both models features parts carried over from the 911 Turbo, making it ten per cent quicker.

Uprated suspension and brakes

Buyers can also specify the Sport Chrono Package, which adds extra adjustable driving modes, and Porsche Active Suspension which lowers the suspension by up to 20mm.

On the surface, the 718 Cayman now features a more muscular appearance with a sharper front fascia, ultra-slim front lights and significantly brawnier-looking air intakes.

It also now features bi-xenon headlights and integrated LED daytime running lights, along with a redesigned rear that incorporates a gloss black accent strip and four-point brake lights.

Inside, the Cayman has also gotten a fairly significant overhaul with the same steering wheel as the 918 Spyder hypercar, an eight-speaker sound system and Apple CarPlay as standard.

Available to order now, the new Porsche 718 Cayman is priced between £39,878 and £48,834 for the Cayman S, and first deliveries are due to arrive this November.
