Porsche reveals new twin-turbo V8 engine

New images and details have been released on Porsche's latest turbo V8 engine - a more potent and efficient 4.0-litre unit that'll be used for the next Cayenne and Panamera.

Porsche has published images and details of its new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine which boasts 542bhp. It will be used for the next-generation Porsche Cayenne and Panamera and is expected to be used by other brands which, like Porsche, are owned by the Volkswagen Group.

Other brands to receive new V8

The new 4.0-litre unit will replace the 4.8-litre V8 currently used by Turbo versions of the Porsche Cayenne and Panamera.

It is also expected to find its way to models for the Audi, Bentley and Lamborghini brands. The Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini’s first SUV, called the Urus, are just a few of the cars that could also receive the new V8.

Many of the key components on the new Porsche engine are similar to that found on the 3.0-litre V6 unit used by the latest Audi S4. The construction of the new 4.0-litre unit promises to offer more power and more torque compared to the 4.8-litre V8 it replaces.

The new engine will also be more efficient thanks in part to the use of cylinder deactivation technology, which comes into play under light loads between 950 and 3,500rpm.

This new V8 could potentially be upgraded for Turbo S models to deliver even more power, possibly in excess of 600bhp.
