Prices and specs for updated Volkswagen e-Up! electric car announced

A much larger battery gives the model a far longer range.

Volkswagen has announced prices and specifications for its improved electric e-Up! city car, which now boasts an electric range of 159 miles.

It shares a powertrain with the new Skoda Citigo-e iV and Seat Mii Electric, with its 32.3kWh battery being significantly larger than the older 18.7kWh battery. It now means the range has nearly doubled from the original e-Up!’s 83-miles to 159 miles.

The original launched in 2014, though its small range and high list price restricted sales.

Volkswagen is hoping this new model will prove to be a more compelling proposition to buyers, with the line-up of cars now starting from £19,695, which includes the £3,500 electric car grant.

The Up! is now the only model of the Volkswagen Group city car triplets to be available with petrol engines, too, with a naturally aspirated 59bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine sitting alongside a turbocharged 113bhp 1.0-litre petrol unit offered on the GTI. Other trim levels include the regular ‘Up!’, Beats and R-Line, with the e-Up! sitting at the top of the range.

Standard equipment includes heated front seats, a heated windscreen, climate control and cruise control, with the e-Up! being differentiated from the rest of the line-up by its 15-inch alloy wheels, revised bumpers and C-shaped daytime running lights. Blue detailing is also used, too, while this is the first new model to wear Volkswagen’s new logo.

Order books are now open for the new e-Up!, with first deliveries expected in the next few months.
