Production begins on BMW 8 Series

The luxury sports coupe is being built at the brand’s Dingolfing plant, which has recently been refurbished for the new model.

BMW has started production of its latest flagship model, the 8 Series, at its Bavarian Dingolfing plant.

The sports coupe will be built using the latest technology in vehicle manufacturing, with many of the devices used to help put the car together either autonomous or smart devices.

Following a multi-million euro refurbishment project, the factory now utilises wearable technology to alert workers if a car needs special equipment fitted or if there are foreign objects in the car.

Workers also used virtual reality glasses to visualise building processes and familiarise themselves with the 8 Series before they started building it.

The 8 Series will be built on the same production line as the 5 and 7 Series.

Dr Andreas Went, head of the Dingolfing plant, said: “As the plant that builds the BMW 7 Series sedans, BMW Group Plant Dingolfing has outstanding expertise in producing vehicles for the luxury segment.

“We are optimally prepared for production of the new BMW 8 Series Coupé. I am sure our customers around the world will love this luxury sportscar.”

Available to buy from November, the 8 Series can be fitted with one of two engines – a 4.4-litre V8 producing 523bhp and a 315bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel unit.
