In the four main categories tested, the Koleos scored more than 60 per cent in all of them, including 90% in adult protection, 79% in child safety and 73% for assistance systems.

Engineered with a high-strength steel passenger structure, the Koleos also comes with adaptive airbags that inflate to a certain size depending on the force of the impact.

Other passive systems include anti-whiplash headrests, anti-submarining front seats – which maintain their structure in an impact – and Isofix points on the rear bench of seats.

Active safety systems fitted as standard include active city emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot warning and traffic sign recognition. Active cruise control also comes as standard.

Other systems available include a rear-view camera, all-around parking sensors and automatic high/low beam control. Hands-free parking can be fitted as an optional extra, where the car takes control of the steering and the driver only has to control the throttle and brake.

Koleos models fitted with the top-end diesel engine comes with four-wheel-drive that can be turned off when not needed and offers better traction in slippery conditions.

Prices for the Koleos start from £27,500.
