Rolls-Royce names new luxurious SUV Cullinan

British luxury car manufacturer's "high-sided" vehicle is officially named, having been developed under the guise of 'Project Cullinan'.

Those looking for a diamond of a next luxury car have a new option coming to the market, with Rolls Royce unveiling the name of its upcoming SUV — Cullinan.

The British manufacturer are describing its upcoming car as a “high-sided vehicle”, with the name coming from a diamond imported to the UK — the largest gem-quality rough one ever found — in 1907 to be presented to King Edward VII as a 66th birthday present.

Alongside the reveal of the name, Rolls-Royce also released pictures of a prototype vehicle undertaking testing in a variety of conditions, including snow and dirt.

These images don’t give much away about the cars looks, but the trademark Rolls-Royce grille and headlights are clear to see.

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, chief executive officer of Rolls-Royce, said: “The name Cullinan has been hiding in plain sight since we revealed it as the project name some years ago.”

“It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product. Cullinan is a motor car of such clarity of purpose, such flawless quality and preciousness, and such presence that it recalibrates the scale and possibility of true luxury. Just like the Cullinan Diamond — the largest flawless diamond ever found — it emerges when it is perfect and exists above all others.”

Rolls Royce hasn’t announced when the final production car will be revealed, nor any technical details, but it could make an appearance at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, taking place from March 6-18.
