Seat to release six electrified vehicles by 2021

The Spanish brand is aiming to make an affordable electric vehicle that comes with a starting price around £17,000.

Spanish firm Seat has announced it will launch six electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles by 2021, as well as develop a new EV platform for compact vehicles.

Set to include two pure electric models and four plug-ins, the models will all be released by the beginning of 2021 and are part of a short-term electric strategy.

An electric version of the Mii city car and the el-Born concept from this year’s Geneva Motor Show will be put into production, while plug-in hybrid iterations of the new Leon and Tarraco will also be introduced.

The Cupra Leon and Cupra Formentor – a vehicle also shown at the Geneva – will also come with plug-in variants.

At its annual press conference, Seat also revealed that it will be developing its own version of Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, which will form the base for multiple vehicles sized up to four metres long.

More than 300 engineers will be participating in the project and Seat hopes that the chassis will form the base of an affordable electric vehicle in the near-future – with a target price of around £17,000.

Seat chief executive officer Luca de Meo said: “Seat now has a clearer role in the Volkswagen Group, and thanks to the results obtained, we have earned the new electric vehicle platform.

“For the first time, the Seat Technical Centre will be developing a platform that may be used by more brands around the globe.”

The firm also announced that 2018 was its most successful year ever, returning profits of €294m (£253.5m) which is an increase of 4.6 per cent.
