Skoda develops app for parents to charge their children for lifts

The ‘Parent Taxi’ app lets parents exchange journeys for chores from their children.

Do you ever find yourself endlessly ferrying your children around?

If not, it seems you’re lucky, given that the average parent spends an additional 1,648 miles driving their children around. If that number of miles was switched to the price of a taxi, it would amount to a significant £12,565 in fares (at London rates).

But Skoda’s new ‘Parent Taxi’ app aims to balance the scales more evenly. The app works like a real taximeter and allows parents to swap journey time for chores from their children. These can include washing the car, feeding a pet, tidying and washing up.

According to the 1,723 respondents to Skoda’s survey, two-thirds of parents admitted to feeling like a taxi service at times.

The app uses live GPS to be able to show how long each journey has taken and how many miles have been completed, with chore options available at the end of a journey.

Parents can then even share a receipt with their children. It can also show the total number of journeys and the number of miles travelled.

Blogger Jo Middleton tested out the app with her teenage daughter Belle. Middleton said: “This is the app I’ve been waiting for! It’s true that kids generally have a better social life than adults and as a result that can mean a lot of car journeys each week.

“Although I love encouraging them to get out and do more, I think it’s a great idea to swap miles for some help around the house in return.”

The Skoda Parent taxi app is free to download for Apple and Android users.
