Solar-powered car parks to go on trial in Edinburgh

A consortium of energy companies is starting the project in Edinburgh which will also allow energy to be put back into the grid.

Edinburgh will host a new trial that will allow electric car users to charge their vehicles through solar power.

The Smart Hubs demonstrator project has been set up by Flexitricity, Flexisolar, Turbo Power Systems and Smart Power Systems, and will also let users put energy back into the grid via vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

The conglomerate is now looking for six sites to begin the trial later this year, with 150 vehicles set to be allowed to charge across the different locations.

By using V2G technology, the group hopes to reduce pressure on the “already strained” National Grid by letting vehicles charge up from energy given back and retained in special storage units, as well as using solar power.

Dr Alistair Martin, Flexitricity chief strategy officer, said: "Having the ability to recharge in a short time using a grid-friendly infrastructure will have a huge impact on the electric vehicles market - it really is a question about how quickly we can deliver this capability.

"We are now looking forward to identifying partner sites and embarking on the trials later this year, as we strive to deliver a solution that will drive the growth of the electric vehicle market and bring transformational benefits to motorists, car park operators and energy re-sellers."

The Scottish government is hoping to phase out all combustion engine-powered vehicles by 2032, complying with the UK’s overall aim of 2040.
