Subaru BRZ updated for 2016, gains five extra horsepower

Despite the fact that the Subaru BRZ is the type of car designed specifically to cater to petrolheads, it’s always been criticised for being a bit underpowered.

Having listened to the requests of its fans, Subaru has given the BRZ a significant update with improvements to the handling and styling, plus a little more power. Emphasis on ‘a little’.

The sole engine choice remains a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre boxer engine, but Subaru has boosted its output by a fairly meagre five horsepower to bring maximum output up to 202bhp.

Revised suspension, improved handling

Regardless, the car also gets updated suspension springs and dampers in addition to a larger rear stabiliser bar and a reinforced strut tower brace to stiffen the chassis and improve its handling.

Subaru has also tweaked the car’s driving modes and stability control systems to improve driveability, with the car’s Sport mode now renamed Track mode.

Buyers can also now specify a Performance Package, which adds larger Brembo brakes to improve stopping power, SACHS Performance suspension and 17-inch black aluminium alloy wheels.

New looks, refreshed interior

As well as that, the BRZ now sports a redesigned front end and aluminium spoiler for improved aerodynamic efficiency, full-LED headlights and new daytime running lights as standard.

Inside, the cockpit has also received a refresh with a new leather-wrapped steering wheel and the option of a 4.2-inch LCD screen next to the rev counter which displays vehicle performance data.

Prices for the updated Subaru BRZ have yet to be announced, but Subaru says that first deliveries of the updated model are due to start from this September.
